This year Amarnath Yatra is starting from July 1. Will continue till 31st August. The registration process for the pilgrimage has started from April 17.
Amarnath Cave, home to the Mahamaya Shaktipeeth is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths. It is believed that Sati fell here. Amarnath Yatra is held every year till Shravan Purnima. Then as the moon gets smaller, the ice Shivalinga gets smaller.
Amarnath temple is located in Anantnag district of Jammu. Located at a distance of 141 km from Srinagar, one has to go to this pilgrimage through Pahelgaon. It takes five days to reach Amarnath from Pahelgaon.
In the book Rajatarangini (Book VII v.183) there is a reference to Krishantha or Amarnath. According to one source, the legendary king Arjaraja (300 BC) used to worship a Shivalinga made of ice. Queen Surymati gifted Amarnath's Trishul, Banling etc. in the 11th century.
A popular view is that Kashmir was once flooded and Kashyap Muni drained the water out through the river. When the water recedes, then Bhrigu Muni sees Amarnath or Shiva.
According to the Puranas, Shiva brought Parvati to this place to teach her about immortality. It is said that Shiva left the bull Nandi, his head moon, wind, fire, water, earth and serpents at different places before embarking on the Amarnath Yatra. That's why it's so important to fans.
There is another story about Amarnath. According to the story, when Mahadev was teaching Parvati about immortality, there were no animals. There were only two pigeon eggs. Those two can still be seen.
